Between the office and the workshop

My name is Julia Bauer and I am currently in my first year of the technical product designer program. As I am interested in mathematics and art, I spent ages looking for the right job on the Internet. That's where I found the profession of technical product designer. I found it interesting that this profession had a lot to do with spatial perception. I then completed two internships at different companies to get a better picture of what it was all about. These confirmed my desire to continue in this profession. As I come from Bruchsal I was familiar with SEW-EURODRIVE and only ever heard and read good things about the company so it was my first choice.

In your first year of a technical product designer training program, you alternate between the workshop and the office in order to get a feel for how the parts that we draw in CAD are then produced. We participate in various basic courses in the workshop. We started off with filing, drilling and bending before moving onto a milling and lathing course.

I appreciate that the company cares about its employees and their environment. SEW-EURODRIVE provides high quality training as well as individual support.

In the office we first learned how to read drawings and drawing by hand. We then took part in a CAD course as an introduction to the program that we will soon be working with every day. We are currently working on a project that combines the workshop and the office: we are designing our own assemblies and then building these in the workshop based on our plans. I am currently creating an excavator and am building this together with a colleague.

In the office I work on improving the drawings or create drawings of components as 3D models in SolidWorks, including those that we previously constructed in the workshop. In the workshop we might receive a bolt or corner slide assembly and draw an individual part drawing for each component. We then use this to build our own assembly. We also receive individual part drawings and produce the corresponding parts.

At the vocational school we have various subjects that specifically prepare us for the profession as well as traditional subjects such as German, English, religion, economics and social studies. During my breaks I spend time with my colleagues or classmates and if the weather's nice we sit on the terrace at the canteen.
