Eco-Design@SEW-EURODRIVE

SEW-EURODRIVE has always been conscious of good Eco-Design. Efficient, easy-to-repair products with a long service life that are part of a single modular system delivered worldwide with first-class services that extend the service life even further. Based on our positive experience with Eco-Design over the last few decades, we are taking an even more systematic approach to continue getting better and anchor Eco-Design firmly in our processes.

What is Eco-Design?

Eco-Design is a systematic approach that takes environmental aspects into account when designing and developing products. It aims to reduce negative environmental impacts throughout the entire product life cycle, from the selection of raw materials to the end of the product life. Applied Eco-Design forms the foundation for the circularity of products.

For SEW-EURODRIVE, this means that decisions for environmentally friendly design must be made as consciously as possible during the product development phase. For this reason, various Eco-KPIs have been developed and an Eco-Design Guideline has been created, published and integrated into the product development process.

We need to learn that in the future, old products will be a raw material source for the new products.

Our implementation strategy

In order to achieve these goals, the Eco-Design of products must be consistently developed further. This enables us to offer our customers not only a technically and economically attractive product portfolio, but also an ecologically attractive product portfolio and deliver added value in achieving ecological goals.

Eco-Design Guideline

The foundation is laid by the so-called "Eco-Design Guideline", or "ECODG" for short, which is largely based on the new EU Ecodesign Regulation "Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)" (EC, 2024). In this document, internal and external requirements are prepared and accompanied by best practice examples as inspiration.

Establishing Eco-Screening to support informed design decisions

Eco-Screening is available to support design decisions (particularly with regard to material selection and circularity). The aim is to make well-founded design decisions based not only on technical and business criteria, but also on ecological assessments

Determine the repair index for all products

To evaluate the repair capability, SEW-EURODRIVE developed a so-called "repair index" that will be determined for all products in the future.
