Weleda is a multinational company producing both beauty products and naturopathic medicines. Products that stand for authenticity, mindfulness, and sustainability, instantly recognizable in drugstores and pharmacies. But how sustainable are the processes behind these products? With the Cradle Campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Weleda sends a strong message: for warehouse logistics that unite ecological responsibility, innovative technology, and social values. The new logistics center follows the Cradle-to-Cradle principle, an approach where products and systems are designed so that, at the end of their lifecycle, they can be fully reused or returned to nature.

What role does SEW-EURODRIVE drive technology play in this?

To achieve maximum energy savings, the implementation was carried out using the latest drive technology from SEW-EURODRIVE, based on the modular automation platform MOVI-C®:

  • Complete automation from a single source
  • Precise drive control with perfect coordination
  • Comprehensive engineering support throughout all project phases

What was Iinstalled?

  • Six energy-efficient storage and retrieval machines, including five single-mast units and one double-mast unit
  • Power and Energy Solutions, including energy storage technology
  • 500 meters of pallet conveyor systems
  • 350 gearmotors

Top performance in storage and conveying:

  • Peak power reduction by a factor of 7
  • Up to 40% lower energy consumption
  • Up to 350 pallet movements per hour, peaking at 450 during high-demand periods

Sustainability highlights:

  • Natural air circulation using storage and retrieval machines – no ventilation system required
  • Use of renewable energy sources such as solar – instead of fossil fuels, even for the stacker cranes
  • A high-bay warehouse rack made of wood – instead of steel
  • External warehouse walls made of clay, sourced directly from the construction ground – instead of concrete

Energy efficiency was a key focus in the electrical design of the site.
