Packaging machine
Nuremberg sausages are part of that northern Bavarian city's history – and an essential part of any meal. This specialty sausage is unique in terms of both its recipe and the way it is made. Up until now, the production process has involved each sausage being fed into the packaging machine individually and manually. Now, however, machine building experts Eberhardt GmbH and mb bergmann have designed an automatic infeed system that greatly increases the dependability, process reliability, and cost-effectiveness of the sausage production process, thanks to the design of the system and its top-quality components from the SEW-EURODRIVE stainless steel drive technology and automation portfolios.
For months now, all the focus at mb bergmann's assembly workshop in Hösbach near Aschaffenburg has been on the sausage. Working in collaboration with design engineers from Eberhardt – the stainless steel specialist based in Lichtenau – the mb bergmann custom machine designers are building a system for inspecting and separating sausages and feeding them into a film packaging machine.
With over 60 years of experience in the processing of stainless steel, Eberhardt GmbH is now one of the leading companies in the industry. Thanks to its extensive expertise, continual product developments, and use of state-of-the-art machinery, the company's products can be found in just about any well-known meat factory anywhere in the world.
mb bergmann GmbH has been an established mechanical and plant engineering partner for over 25 years. The company offers comprehensive design engineering, manufacturing, and custom machine design services – from planning through to final acceptance. Boasting state-of-the-art machinery and certified quality, mb bergmann creates customized solutions for a whole host of industries, such as the food industry, the packaging sector, and automation technology.
1. Improved efficiency and ergonomics thanks to automation
Instead of infeeding sausages manually, an automated solution is used, which improves working conditions, reduces monotonous tasks for staff, and greatly enhances ergonomics in the workplace.
2. Better process reliability and consistent quality
Automated handling reduces the reject rate to a minimum. The system ensures consistent quality when the sausages are fed into the packaging machine, irrespective of the specific shape of each sausage.
3. Hygienic design for the food industry
Made completely from stainless steel, the system meets the very highest hygiene standards (e.g. IP69K). It is easy to clean, corrosion-resistant, and reduces the risk of cross-contamination.
4. Integration into existing production processes
The system has a modular design and can be integrated into existing lines perfectly, without any need for major modifications. This increases flexibility and reduces implementation costs.
5. High throughput without compromising on precision
With a target rate of 1000 sausages per minute, the system's output is impressive, but it also separates, inspects, and handles the sausages with precision – so it is an ideal solution for large-scale industrial production.
"We use gearmotors from our stainless steel portfolio for this sausage infeed system, which is made completely from stainless steel and boasts an IP69K degree of protection. After all, the system needs to be able to withstand use of a high-pressure cleaner on a daily basis," explains Sarah Herberger, solution manager at SEW-EURODRIVE. "The gearmotors have been designed in such a way that the surface is particularly easy to clean. What's more, the high-quality stainless steel design protects them against corrosion and makes them resistant to acids and alkalis. Thanks to the way the gearmotors are designed, cleaning time and resources can be reduced to a minimum, so the gearmotors not only durable, but efficient and cost-effective, too."Sarah Herberger
The end customer had firm ideas about the drive technology, too. "The customer explicitly wanted SEW-EURODRIVE technology to be integrated, because they'd had excellent experience of it before," Mr. Schwebel explains. "We were very happy to accommodate their request, because we also know how impressive SEW-EURODRIVE products are."Jörg Schwebel
