True to the slogan, "Water is life," the HANSA-HEEMANN group obtains the water for its beverages from deep wells, bottles it, and delivers to customers across Southern Germany. The beverages are bottled in PET bottles, which are formed out of small plastic blanks by a blow molding machine.
The packaging units used are 1.5-liter and 0.5-liter bottles. Production operates in three shifts. During one of the 52 calendars weeks, regularly scheduled maintenance is done on one of the filling lines. This high degree of capacity utilization depends on reliable drive technology backed up by good service. That's why in 2006, HANSA-HEEMANN first chose SEW-EURODRIVE as a drive supplier. In March 2007, the first lines were equipped with decentralized MOVIMOT® drive units. These AC asynchronous motors with integrated frequency inverters are in operation around the clock.
A few years later, it was time to increase production. Thanks to their positive experience with decentralized technology, HANSA-HEEMANN stipulated drive technology from SEW-EURODRIVE in their call for tenders for the new filling lines. According to plant manager Thomas Herzog: "We chose SEW-EURODRIVE once more to be our drive supplier because of our fruitful cooperation with them in the past, their proximity, and their 24-hour standby service." The new lines have been running since March 2014 on integrated MGF..-DSM gearmotors from our MOVIGEAR® mechatronic drive system family. These motors are specially calibrated for use in beverage transportation facilities and already qualify for the current highest energy efficiency class for motors, IE4.
The filling plant's energy management system monitors all energy consumption. It monitors the process technology in the boiler house, the refrigeration facilities and compressors, the building technology such as lighting and ventilation, and finally the drive technology. "With the IE4 MGF..-DSM drives, HANSA-HEEMANN is totally up-to-date in regard to energy efficiency, as well."
In addition to the MGF..-DSM units, they use bevel-helical gear units and helical-worm gear units with brakemotors of the DR.. series for driving inclined belt systems. In the packaging department, robots from Kuka are at work. And once again, the drive technology in this department comes from SEW-EURODRIVE: planetary servo gear units, helical-bevel gear units and CMP.. servomotors controlled by MOVIDRIVE® single-axis servo controllers. In all, about 800 SEW-EURODRIVE drives were installed at this location.
With so many units installed, effective customer service is crucial. Plant manager Thomas Herzog explains: "The service model offered by SEW-EURODRIVE fits our operation requirements perfectly. One important factor is certainly the 24-hour hotline that SEW-EURODRIVE provides. And cooperation with SEW-EURODRIVE, even in occasional service calls, has always brought entirely satisfactory results. In three-shift operation, especially, it's very important to choose suppliers who can offer excellent support."
SEW-EURODRIVE has an extensive stock of spare parts for service emergencies. This allows us to get drives back up and running as quickly as possible.
Customer requirements
For the customer, it was crucial that the drives be high in quality and energy efficiency, and that the service model provided be comprehensive.
Our solution
The integrated MGF..-DSM gearmotor from the MOVIGEAR® mechatronic drive system boasts high energy efficiency. This system is specially calibrated for use in beverage transportation facilities and already qualifies for the current highest energy efficiency class for motors, IE4. Due to our proximity and 24-hour standby service model, the customer can receive support as quickly as possible from the SEW-EURODRIVE emergency service.
A crucial factor in our deciding for SEW-EURODRIVE was the high energy efficiency of the SEW-EURODRIVE motors used here. Of course, the proximity of SEW-EURODRIVE to our location…
… and the high system availability also played a role.
With our energy management system, this is an important concern in new calls for tenders. It was clear to us that we wanted SEW-EURODRIVE motors for our production." This requirement for the system manufacturer was clearly stated in the call for tenders. But that was not all: "During the approval process, we verify that the plant specifications of the equipment manufacturers are actually being met," said the plant manager.
We chose SEW-EURODRIVE once more to be our drive supplier because of our fruitful cooperation with them in the past, their proximity, and their 24-hour standby service. We even had the opportunity to visit SEW-EURODRIVE and inspect the production plant to get an impression of our own. That strengthened our confidence in SEW-EURODRIVE.

If necessary, the customer can get support from SEW-EURODRIVE's emergency service as quickly as possible.
If a drive needs to be replaced, we're talking about hours—not days or weeks. And considering the large number of motors in operation, the number of such service calls is vanishingly small.
