Staatliches Hofbräuhaus München has been actively committed to environmental and climate protection for many years. The brewery is EMAS-validated, a member of the Bavarian Environmental Pact, and part of the German Environmental Management Association (B.A.U.M. e.V.). Since 2009, 100 % of its electricity needs have been covered by green energy. Additional initiatives – such as an in-house photovoltaic system, biodiversity projects on the brewery grounds, and its own pure yeast cultivation – underscore its holistic approach to sustainability.
In close collaboration with plant manufacturer Albert Frey and the SEW-EURODRIVE Drive Technology Center South, Hofbräu München modernized its keg filling system using the modular MOVI-C® automation platform. The brewery benefits from the versatility and seamless integration of SEW-EURODRIVE’s portfolio.
For keg transport, the decentralized drive unit MOVIGEAR® performance is used. It combines a synchronous motor, flat gear unit, and frequency inverter in one compact, energy-efficient, and robust solution – ideal for humid environments and frequent cleaning.
In the portal for horizontal and vertical strapping, DRN.. series gearmotors combined with worm gear units power the lifting systems. The corresponding MOVIDRIVE® technology inverters are installed in the control cabinet. Since SEW-EURODRIVE’s centralized and decentralized electronics can be integrated via standard fieldbus systems and engineering software without any difference, Hofbräu München can fully leverage the advantages of both worlds.
I’ve already had great experience with decentralized technology. In our pressure tank cellar, we use a decentralized Profibus connection made of stainless steel – completely without a control cabinet.Silvio Di Tano (right in the picture)We’ve been running this technology without any issues for two years now – despite the constantly humid environment, where a water hose is a brewer’s constant companion. Thanks to the more compact design and the decentralized setup of all drives, we’re now achieving double the filling capacity on the same footprint.
This project was a milestone – it was the first time an entire keg system was equipped with decentralized technology. It shows how future-ready our solutions are.Albert Schenker (left in the picture)When the idea was born, the MOVI-C® technology was still brand new – MOVIGEAR® performance in IE5 with PROFINET. Today, that’s our standard.
