Ecodesign regulation for motors and inverters

  • New efficiency requirements for asynchronous motors and frequency converters

Applies to motors from 0,12 kW

Also applies to brake motors, explosion-proof motors, 8-pole and large motors.

On 25 October 2019, the requirements of the new Regulation (EU) 2019 / 1781 were finally adopted. The scope of this renewed regulation based on the Ecodesign Directive (EU) 2009 / 125 / EC now includes additional SEW-EURODRIVE products for the periods after July 1, 2021 and after July 1, 2023.

Comprehensive regulation

The innovations affect engines that have not been affected by regulation to date. In the future, smaller motors in the single- or three-phase versions with power ratings from 0.12 kW, brake motors, explosion-proof motors, 8-pole as well as large motors (with power ratings from 375 - 1,000 kW) will also be part of the regulations in the EU regulation.

Your suitable options

Mains-powered motors in inverter operation must then also meet the highest requirements and the frequency inverters must meet the highest possible efficiency class. Despite the many far-reaching changes, customers and users of our drives need not worry. We have been supplying motors and frequency inverters that meet the objectives of this EU regulation since 2014.

Motors for you

We make it easy for you

In detail, the SEW product portfolio already offers suitable drives. In current applications, in which motors in the DRS... design have been the first choice up to now, our DRN... series motors with IE3 efficiency class are suitable as successors for low power outputs from 0.12 kW or for brake motors. These motors therefore exceed the required IE2 class for low powers and are cost-neutral. The replacement in explosion-proof drives with EDRS...- or EDRE...- are our EDRN.. motors, which also meet the IE3 efficiency class and which are compliant with the ATEX directive 2014 / 34 / EU in parallel.

The compact DRN... motors with our MOVIMOT® inverters are ideally suited for inverter operation by meeting the required efficiency requirements for both products. But also the inverters for control cabinet installation of the MOVITRAC® and MOVIDRIVE® series and from the MOVI-C® modular automation system exceed the requirements of the EU directive.

As of July 01, 2021, 8-pole three-phase asynchronous motors will also be covered by the regulations for Europe. From July 1, 2023, single-phase asynchronous motors with 2, 4, 6 or 8 poles from 0.12 kW must comply with class IE2 and three-phase asynchronous motors with 2, 4 or 6 poles from 75 to 100 kW must comply with IE4 class. Brake and explosion-proof motors are excluded from this IE4 requirement and must only comply with IE3 class.

The new regulation creates the possibility to replace engines used in machinery and equipment purchased before 01.07.2022 once with identical engines. This replacement regulation is new and valid until July 1, 2029. SEW-EURODRIVE must identify, document and archive these replacement procedures if the market supervisory authorities wish to inspect them.

To facilitate the changeover, we keep our products and tools up to date for you and are constantly developing them further. For example, you can select your drive as usual online in our product configurator and this will then already take the new requirements and exceptions into account.

As the first source of information for worldwide energy efficiency regulations, our IE-Guide is available in our Online Support. At the same place you will also find a conversion aid and an energy saving calculator.

In this way, we make it easy for you to switch to products conforming to the new EU regulation. If you have any further questions or are unsure, our field service is always available - support is only a phone call away.
