Christmas food ...... other countries, other customs

Christmas is celebrated throughout the world

Christmas brings people together across many cultural boundaries. Yet Christmas customs in individual countries are by no means uniform. Food is one area in particular where there are major regional differences.

Last year, we collected numerous recipes from countries around the world during our Christmas campaign. And many of our local subsidiaries contributed recipes for typical dishes and baked goods from their regions. We presented 24 recipes in total.

Some of these were very familiar to us in Germany, while others were totally alien. Yet all the recipes had one thing in common – for large numbers of people in the world, they are the embodiment of Christmas.

Chipa guasu - recipe from Paraguay
Chipa guasu - recipe from Paraguay

Last year's Christmas campaign was one of the most successful campaigns we have ever featured on our website. We had a particularly strong response to a recipe sent in by our colleagues in Paraguay for chipa guasu.

The dish in question is a savory corn cake and one of 70 different varieties of "chipa", which originates from Paraguay.

Many people find the flavor of chipa guasu absolutely delicious and the dish is often served at asados. These are social gatherings where various pieces of beef and pork and sausages are grilled and eaten – the Paraguayan version of the American barbecue.

The meaning of "chipa guasu" is fairly straightforward. The first word, "chipa", is the generic term for a varied group of corn-based rolls and savory cakes. The second word, "guasu", means "large" and refers to the fact that it is the largest of all chipas.
